Non-medical practitioners are invited to attend this exceptional opportunity to be better informed about the rationale and use of antidepressants in Major Depressive Disorder, PTSD and Anxiety Disorders (eg. GAD, Social Anxiety and Panic Disorder). The role of pharmacotherapy is often confusing and controversial. Psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors and other health care workers are not trained in psychopharmacology. Their perspective on medication is often a result of what they observe or is reported by clients/patients.

Prescribing doctors are not always trained in trauma, its complex symptomatology and high rates of co-morbidity. Inappropriate medication and dosage can cause patients to endure significant added difficulties. This raises various ethical and practical considerations in psychotherapy.

The panel will provide an introduction to the benefits, limitations and factors in selecting if, and when, a particular type of medication may be useful.

Learning Objectives :

  • to assist non-medical practitioners to understand the potential benefits of medication and to know when to question what has been prescribed and how to guide their client/patient
  • to explain briefly what the most commonly used medications are doing for the patient ie. the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
  • to explore the benefits of psychotherapy in conjunction with pharmacotherapy
  • to provide a forum for questions related to the use of pharmacotherapy
