TOUR 1 on Friday 12 September 2003: Spa Country
Within a comfortable drive of the city and set amidst a glorious mass of rolling hills is the spa township of Daylesford. Famous nowadays for its abundant supply of natural springs mineral water, it was the discovery of gold during the 1860's that established many of the town's fine buildings. One such building that has undergone an outstanding restoration is the former private residence of the gold commissioner which later became the Holy Cross Convent. Closed in 1982 it was purchased by a local artist in 1988, restored and opened in 1990 as the Convent Gallery. Its 7 galleries display works by local painters, potters, jewellers and sculptors. Nearby is the outstanding Lake House Restaurant, highly regarded as one of the best regional dining experiences around. Enjoy a main course lunch before departing for Lavandula, the lavender farm that surrounds beautifully restored 1850's stone buildings that were originally built by Italian speaking Swiss settlers.

Tour 2 on Saturday 13 September 2003: Our Golden Heritage
Travel to the west where much of Melbourne's early wealth was derived, from the goldfields at Ballarat. The journey would be broken with a farm visit to Lal Lal Estate. This family owned property of 5000 acres runs sheep and cattle and a genuine warm country welcome is extended. Morning tea will be followed by a garden walk, shearing demo and sheep dog roundup. Travel then across to Sovereign Hill, the recreated gold mining township of the 1850's where lunch and a mine tour would feature.

Cost: $132.00 pp, based on a minimum of 30 people.
Includes: Deluxe coach transport, morning tea, shearing and sheep dog demos at Lal Lal Estate, entry to Sovereign Hill, underground mine tour, two course lunch, guide, GST.
Times: 8.30am to 5.30pm.

Tour 3 on Sunday 14 September 2003: Yarra Valley Wine Tour
One of the worlds premium wine producing regions lies to the north-east of Melbourne, within an hours drive of the city centre. This cool climate region that was first planted in 1838 is renowned for its sparkling and elegant table wines. Visits would be made to two family properties, Kellybrook and De Bortoli as well as to a multi-national owned operation, Domaine Chandon.

Cost: $99.00 per person, based on a minimum of 30 people.

General Information

Airport Departure Tax

You are charged a $AUD38.00 departure tax on leaving Australia. This will be charged automatically at the time of purchasing your ticket.

Banking
24-hour ATMs are located throughout the city, suburbs and regional areas. Most major banks are open weekdays from 9.30am - 4.00pm and close on Fridays at 5.00pm.

Clothing - Climate
As it will be the beginning of spring you are best to bring clothes to allow for a range of weather conditions from warm sunny days up to 22 degrees Celsius, to cool or even chilly days as low as 8 at night. Smart comfortable, causal dress is suitable for the conference and formal dress for the conference dinner.

Cuisine
Melbourne is a multicultural city offering a wide range of superb culinary delights. It's a gastronomical paradise!

Currency Exchange
Foreign currency exchange offices are located at international airports. These typically offer less attractive rates than banks. Money is worked in decimal currency (dollars and cents).
Many international banks and their agencies have branches in cities throughout Australia.

Credit Cards
All major credit cards are accepted in most Australian facilities ie. American Express, Bankcard, Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club. The conference accepts Mastercard, Visa and Bankcard.

Duty Free Allowances
International travellers are entitled to $AUD400 of duty free shopping per adult and $AUD200 per child. In addition, adults (18 and over) may purchase 2 bottles of liquor (2,250ml) and 250 cigarettes or equivalent tobacco. Please check before buying as allowances are subject to change.

Electricity
The current used is 240 volts, AC universal outlets. Universal outlets for 240v or 110v shavers are standard in most hotels. Airports and travel shops sell an adaptor that you may require.

Goods and Services Tax

Passport and Visa
Some countries do not require a visa to enter Australia. However, it is essential that you check with Australian Immigration before you depart your country. Visas must be obtained from appropriate Australian offices (eg. the Embassy, Consulate, High Commission near you) before travelling. Some travel agencies will arrange this for you.

Rental Cars
Airports offer offices for all major rental cars. However, it is advisable to make your reservation prior to arrival. Your travel agent can assist with road regulations - the most important is that the correct side to drive on is the left-hand side of the road (the steering wheel is on the right). An international driver's licence is not necessary but you should bring your regular driving licence.

Shopping Hours
24-hour supermarkets, fast food and convenience stores are readily available. Most shops open between 9.00am - 6.00pm weekdays with a later close on Fridays at 9.00pm and noon and/or 5.00pm closing on Saturdays. Only major stores tend to open on Sundays until 5.00pm.

Time
Melbourne operates on Eastern Standard Time (AEST) which is 10 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (and 11 hours AEDT from the end of October to March).

Transport to Hotels
Some hotels offer a courtesy bus to and from Tullamarine international airport. Skybus operates a shuttle bus service with convenient pick-up and drop-off at the airport at $AUD13.00 one-way and $22 return for adults. Children are $5 one-way and $10 return. Family tickets cost $26 one-way. Taxi cabs are also available costing you about $35.00 one-way depending on the time of day. The central business district of Melbourne is 22km from the airport.
